Name Theory: Beware Noun Names

Noun names are growing in popularity—for babies and for characters. But like baby names which have sadly sometimes gone too far (Blue Ivy, Messiah), characters’ names sometimes venture into the bizarre or laughable.

If a writer wants to choose a name that has word play, one that is fun and maybe a bit silly, one that makes people think, then that’s fine. As long as the name is chosen with eyes wide open.

Choose names with care. Beware the increasingly popular noun names, and names that are homophones of nouns. Be vigilant not to use an unintentionally funny name.

Like Paige Turner.

When you hear people say that you shouldn’t worry about character names, keep Miss Turner in mind. While crackers don’t matter [in joke], character names do.
